Easy Tips to Maintain a Bright Smile

Meet The Doctor

Dr. Mary Rock

The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.

Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.

Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.

Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.

At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.

Everyone loves a bright, white smile. It boosts your confidence and makes you feel great. But keeping your teeth white can sometimes be a challenge. Many different things, such as food, drinks, and habits, can stain your teeth over time. Fortunately, there are simple steps you can take to maintain a bright smile every day.

Keeping your smile bright doesn’t have to be difficult. With the right daily habits, you can ensure your teeth stay sparkling white. From daily brushing and flossing to making smart choices about what you eat and drink, you can keep your teeth healthy and looking their best. Regular visits to the dentist also play a crucial role in keeping your smile in top condition.

In this article, we’ll explore easy tips to help you maintain a bright smile. We’ll cover the importance of daily oral hygiene, foods to eat (and avoid), professional dental treatments, and habits that can help or hurt your teeth. By following these tips, you can enjoy a beautiful, bright smile for years to come.

How to Brush and Floss with Braces

Brushing and flossing with braces might seem tricky at first, but with a few pointers, you can keep your teeth and braces clean and healthy.

Start by using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Angle the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and make sure to brush all surfaces of each tooth, including the front, back, and chewing surfaces. Pay special attention to cleaning around brackets and wires, as these areas can trap food particles.

Electric toothbrushes can be very helpful as they can provide a more thorough clean with less effort. However, manual brushing is still effective as long as you’re thorough and consistent. Brush for at least two minutes twice a day to keep plaque at bay.

Flossing with braces requires a bit more effort. Use a floss threader to help get the floss under the archwire. Carefully floss between your teeth and along the gum line, making sure not to force the floss, which can damage your braces. Alternatively, you can use orthodontic floss or interdental brushes, which can make the process easier and quicker.

Foods to Avoid and Foods That Are Braces-Friendly

What you eat can have a big impact on your braces and overall oral health. Some foods can damage your braces or get stuck, leading to discomfort or even broken brackets and wires.

Avoid sticky foods like caramel, chewing gum, and taffy, as they can get stuck in your braces and are difficult to clean off. Hard foods, such as nuts, popcorn, and candy, can break brackets and wires, so it’s best to stay away from them. Cutting hard fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots into smaller pieces can make them safer to eat.

Braces-friendly foods are soft and less likely to cause damage. This includes dairy products like yogurt and cheese, soft fruits like bananas and berries, and cooked vegetables. Proteins such as scrambled eggs, chicken, and fish are also safe choices, as are grains and pasta.

Maintaining a balanced diet with braces is important not just for your orthodontic treatment but for your overall health. By paying attention to what you eat and avoiding certain foods, you can keep your teeth intact and ensure your treatment progresses smoothly.

Dealing with Discomfort and Emergencies

Braces can sometimes cause discomfort, especially after they’ve been adjusted. Knowing how to manage this discomfort can make your experience much smoother. Simple over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate soreness. Applying orthodontic wax to brackets and wires that rub against your inner cheeks or lips can prevent sores and cuts.

For minor emergencies such as a loose bracket or poking wire, you can often handle the situation at home until you can get to your orthodontist. For a loose bracket, gently push it back into place and apply orthodontic wax to hold it temporarily. If a wire is poking, use a small orthodontic pencil eraser or a clean pair of nail clippers to bend it back into place or trim it, being careful not to cut the wire too short.

However, for more serious issues like severe pain, broken braces, or if an appliance you’re using gets stuck, call your orthodontist right away. They can provide guidance on what to do next and schedule a repair appointment as soon as possible.

Regular Dental Visits and Maintaining Oral Hygiene

Regular visits to your orthodontist and dentist are crucial while you have braces. Orthodontic appointments help track your treatment’s progress and make necessary adjustments to ensure your teeth move correctly. Skipping these visits can prolong your treatment time and lead to other complications.

Dental check-ups are equally important. They ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy throughout your orthodontic treatment. Dental cleanings help remove plaque and tartar that you can’t reach with brushing and flossing alone. Regular check-ups can also catch any other dental issues that might arise.

To maintain good oral hygiene between visits, stick to a regular cleaning routine. This includes brushing twice a day for two minutes, using fluoride toothpaste, and flossing daily. You might even consider using an antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce bacteria and prevent gum disease.

Conclusion

Taking care of your braces doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right approach to brushing and flossing, careful attention to your diet, and knowing how to handle discomfort and emergencies, you can ensure a smooth and successful orthodontic journey. Regular visits to your orthodontist and dentist will help keep your teeth and gums healthy while your braces work to align your smile.

By following these simple tips, you can make your braces experience much easier and more effective. Taking the time to care for your braces will pay off in the end, giving you a beautiful, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime. Remember, your efforts play a crucial role in the success of your orthodontic treatment.
