The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.
Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.
Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.
Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.
At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.
Preventing cavities is essential for keeping your teeth strong and healthy. Cavities, also known as tooth decay, can lead to pain and more serious dental issues if not addressed. The good news is that preventing cavities doesn't have to be difficult. With simple daily habits and smart choices, you can keep your teeth cavity-free.
Brushing and flossing are the foundation of good oral hygiene. They remove food particles and plaque that can cause tooth decay. But that's not all—what you eat and how often you visit the dentist also play a big role. Healthy eating habits can strengthen your teeth and reduce the risk of cavities. Regular dental checkups help identify any potential problems early on, saving you from more significant issues later.
Let's explore these simple tips in detail to ensure you have all the information you need to prevent cavities effectively.
Brushing your teeth the right way is key to preventing cavities. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles to avoid damaging your gums. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use gentle, circular motions. Make sure to brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the fronts, backs, and chewing surfaces. Spend at least two minutes brushing to get a thorough clean. Don’t forget to brush your tongue, as bacteria can build up there too.
Replacing your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed, is important. Worn-out brushes can't clean teeth well. Also, use toothpaste with fluoride, which helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay.
Flossing is just as crucial as brushing. It removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth and along the gum line, where your toothbrush can’t reach. To floss effectively, use about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around your middle fingers, leaving a few inches to work with. Gently slide the floss between your teeth and curve it into a C shape around each tooth, moving it up and down.
What you eat affects your teeth. Consuming foods rich in calcium, like milk, cheese, and yogurt, helps strengthen your teeth. Crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots, and celery act like natural toothbrushes, helping to scrub away plaque as you chew. Foods rich in phosphorus, like eggs, fish, and nuts, also contribute to healthy teeth by protecting and rebuilding enamel.
Drinking plenty of water, especially fluoridated water, helps wash away food particles and bacteria. It also keeps your mouth hydrated, reducing the risk of cavities. Stick to a balanced diet to keep your teeth strong and cavity-free.
Sugary and acidic foods are your teeth's worst enemies. Sugar feeds the bacteria in your mouth, which produce acids that erode tooth enamel. Avoid consuming too many sweets, candies, and sugary drinks like soda and fruit juices. If you do eat something sugary, try to brush your teeth soon afterward.
Acidic foods and drinks, such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, and vinegar, can also wear down your enamel. Limit these foods in your diet and rinse your mouth with water after eating them. If you can't brush your teeth right away, chewing sugar-free gum can help increase saliva production and neutralize acids in your mouth.
Regular dental checkups are vital for maintaining good oral health. Visiting the dentist every six months allows for early detection of any issues, such as cavities, gum disease, or other dental problems. Catching these issues early can save you from more extensive and costly treatments later on. Professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar build-up that regular brushing and flossing can't eliminate.
Dental checkups also include an examination of your mouth, teeth, and gums, which helps in spotting any signs of oral cancer or other serious conditions. Your dentist can provide personalized advice on how to improve your dental care routine. Regular visits to the dentist are an essential part of keeping your teeth and gums healthy and strong.
During a dental cleaning, the hygienist first performs an initial examination of your teeth and gums. They use a small mirror to check for signs of gingivitis or other potential issues. Next, they use a scaler to remove plaque and tartar build-up from around your gum line and between your teeth. This process might be a bit noisy but is necessary for effective cleaning.
After scaling, the hygienist will polish your teeth using a high-powered electric brush and gritty toothpaste. This step helps remove any remaining plaque and gives your teeth a smooth and shiny finish. Finally, they will floss your teeth to ensure all areas are clean and might apply a fluoride treatment to strengthen your enamel and protect against cavities.
Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay. Using toothpaste and mouthwash with fluoride is an easy way to incorporate this into your daily routine. Fluoride treatments at the dentist's office can provide additional protection, especially for children or those at higher risk for cavities.
Dental sealants are another effective preventive measure. They are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. Sealants create a barrier, preventing food and bacteria from getting stuck in the grooves and causing cavities. They're especially helpful for kids, but adults can benefit from them too.
Chewing sugar-free gum has several benefits for your teeth. It helps increase saliva production, which naturally cleans your mouth and neutralizes acids produced by bacteria. Saliva also helps to wash away food particles and strengthens your teeth with minerals like calcium and phosphate.
Preventing cavities is simpler than you might think. By following proper brushing and flossing techniques, eating a tooth-friendly diet, and visiting the dentist regularly, you can keep your teeth healthy and strong. Adding fluoride and sealants to your routine and chewing sugar-free gum, provides extra protection against cavities.
