Recognizing Signs of Oral Cancer: When to See a Dentist

Meet The Doctor

Dr. Mary Rock

The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.

Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.

Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.

Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.

At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.

Your oral health is more than just keeping a bright smile. It's also about ensuring that your mouth is free from any serious conditions, including oral cancer. Oral cancer, like many other types, is most treatable when caught early. Knowing the signs can make all the difference in effective treatment and recovery. By staying informed and proactive, you safeguard not only the health of your mouth but also your overall well-being.

In Council Bluffs, IA, having access to reliable and professional dental care means you're better equipped to catch these potential issues early. Bluffs Dental is committed to helping the community maintain optimum oral health and recognize symptoms that could warrant further attention.

Early Signs and Symptoms of Oral Cancer

Spotting signs of oral cancer involves being vigilant about changes in your mouth. Here are some symptoms that should prompt a closer look:

  • Persistent sores on the lips or in the mouth that do not heal
  • Unusual lumps or thickened areas in the mouth or throat
  • White or red patches on the gums, tongue, tonsil, or lining of the mouth
  • Numbness or discomfort in any part of the mouth
  • Ear pain without loss of hearing
  • A sore throat or feeling that something is caught in your throat

If you notice these symptoms persisting for more than two weeks, it's time to consult a dentist. Identifying these changes early allows for timely diagnosis and treatment. Remember, being proactive about your health plays a key role in cancer prevention and successful management.

Risk Factors for Oral Cancer

Understanding what can increase the risk of oral cancer helps in making informed lifestyle choices. Some primary risk factors include:

1. Tobacco Use: Cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and smokeless tobacco products significantly increase the chance of developing oral cancer.

2. Heavy Alcohol Consumption: Drinking alcohol in excess can make the mouth more susceptible to cancerous changes.

3. Human Papillomavirus (HPV): Certain strains of HPV are linked to oral cancers, making vaccinations and safe practices crucial.

4. Sun Exposure: Prolonged exposure to the sun is a known cause of lip cancer. Wearing lip balm with sun protection can help.

5. Diet: A diet lacking in fruits and vegetables might increase cancer risk due to reduced antioxidant intake.

Adjusting these factors could help decrease your risk. Opting for healthier choices and seeking regular dental advice ensures you're on the right path to reducing potential hazards.

Importance of Regular Dental Check-Ups

Regular dental visits are your best ally in catching oral cancer early. When you visit your dentist regularly, you provide an opportunity for any changes in your oral health to be noticed promptly. During a dental check-up, the dentist examines your mouth, looking for any signs of cancer or other serious conditions.

This thorough screening can include a visual examination and, if needed, specialized tests to explore any unusual areas more closely. Early detection significantly improves the effectiveness of treatment and increases recovery rates. Consistent check-ups mean problems are caught before they become more serious, offering better peace of mind.

When to See a Dentist

Knowing when to consult a dentist can sometimes be tricky, but there are clear signs that can signal it's time for an appointment. If you have a sore that doesn't heal within two weeks, it's wise to have it checked. Similarly, persistent lumps, patches, or discomfort in your mouth should be evaluated by a professional.

It's also important to act if you experience unexplained bleeding, difficulty swallowing, or a change in your voice. These could be signs of something requiring attention. Continually monitoring how you feel helps you make informed decisions about seeking professional help.

Stay Proactive About Oral Health

Maintaining vigilance over your oral health can prevent issues before they start. Engage in practices that keep your mouth healthy, like brushing, flossing, and eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Avoid habits that increase your risk, such as smoking or excessive drinking. Staying informed about the risk factors and signs of oral cancer enables you to take charge of your health. Remember, the effort you put into monitoring your oral habits pays off by reducing the chances of encountering more serious problems down the road.

Understanding your role in your own healthcare journey is empowering. Recognizing warning signs and making regular dental visits can all be part of a routine that supports oral well-being. This proactive approach not only enhances your quality of life but also reinforces the trust you place in professional guidance. By staying attentive, you're making a commitment to health that benefits you both immediately and in the long term.
