The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.
Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.
Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.
Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.
At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.
Nobody likes dealing with cavities. They show up unexpectedly, causing discomfort and potentially more serious dental problems. Fortunately, keeping your teeth cavity-free is about establishing simple daily habits that anyone can adopt. Consider how impactful a healthy smile can be in your day-to-day life. Each time you laugh or chat with friends, a bright smile adds a touch of confidence and warmth to your interactions. Maintaining that radiant grin requires understanding the basic practices that help prevent cavities.
Cavities develop when bacteria in the mouth produce acid that erodes your teeth, leading to decay. This results from several factors, including poor oral hygiene, a diet laden with sugary and acidic foods, and infrequent dental checkups. But with a few adjustments to your daily routine, you can protect your teeth and keep that smile shining bright. Here are some practical steps to help you commit to a cavity-free lifestyle.
Starting with the basics, brushing your teeth twice a day is a fundamental step in preventing cavities. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles and fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride plays a critical role by strengthening the enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks. Follow a consistent routine of brushing every morning and before bed. This will help remove food particles and plaque, which are primary culprits behind cavity formation.
Flossing enhances this dental care by reaching tight spots between teeth where bits of food hide. Here's how to get it right:
Proper technique is key, but don’t rush it. Set aside extra minutes for flossing, and your teeth will thank you. Remember, building these habits now makes a big difference long-term, reducing the risk of cavities.
What you eat plays a big role in keeping your teeth cavity-free. Choosing foods that are good for your teeth is like giving them a security team against decay. Fresh fruits and vegetables, especially crunchy ones like apples and carrots, can help scrub your teeth clean while you chew. Dairy products like cheese and yogurt aren’t just tasty; they provide calcium and phosphates, which strengthen your enamel.
Sugary and acidic foods can weaken your teeth. Candy, sodas, and cakes stick to your teeth, inviting bacteria to produce acids that cause cavities. It’s not just sweets you need to be mindful of, but acidic foods and drinks too, like citrus fruits and fruit juices. Moderation and rinsing your mouth with water after indulging can help minimize impact.
Making regular visits to dentists in Council Bluffs is crucial for maintaining dental health. These checkups shouldn't be skipped, even if everything seems fine. During visits, dental professionals look out for signs of trouble long before you might notice anything.
What can you expect? First, you'll have a thorough cleaning where dentists remove plaque and tartar that your routine might miss. They'll also offer insights on improving your routine and might even catch small cavities before they grow. This proactive approach helps keep major dental issues at bay, ensuring your smile lasts for years to come.
Fluoride is essential in fighting cavities. It's known for strengthening enamel and making it less susceptible to decay. When you use toothpaste and mouthwashes with fluoride, you're providing your teeth with a protective shield. Many cities, like Council Bluffs, even include fluoride in the water supply, adding defense.
When choosing products, look for those labeled with fluoride. There’s a wide range accessible for all age groups, so you can pick what suits you best. For children, ensuring they use age-appropriate toothpaste can help build a strong foundation for their dental future.
Creating a routine that guards against cavities is easier than it seems. By sticking to these habits, from mindful eating to routine checkups and using fluoride products, you’re actively investing in the future of your smile. Keep in mind that good oral health translates to not just a picture-perfect smile but also a boost in overall well-being. Remember, the steps you take now help protect against challenges and keep your teeth in tip-top shape.
