Everyday Dental Habits Council Bluffs Dentists Wish You Knew

Meet The Doctor

Dr. Mary Rock

The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.

Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.

Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.

Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.

At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.

Simple Daily Habits That Protect Your Smile

Healthy teeth do not come from one perfect day of brushing and flossing. They come from small things you do over and over. The good news is that those habits do not have to be hard or take a lot of time. A few smart choices in the morning, at bedtime, and around meals can keep your mouth cleaner and your breath fresher.

Families in Council Bluffs are busy with school, work, sports, and summer activities, so long routines are not realistic. What does work is choosing simple steps that fit into your real life. In this article, we will walk through easy habits, what to avoid, and when it is time to see a dentist in Council Bluffs for extra help. At Valley View Dental, we focus on friendly, realistic care that works for your whole family, not just perfect routines on paper.

Brushing Smarter, Not Harder

Brushing twice a day is the base of a healthy smile. Morning brushing clears away plaque and morning breath so you start the day fresh. Brushing at night is even more important, because it cleans off food and bacteria that would sit on your teeth while you sleep.

Late nights, sleepovers, and packed summer days can make kids and teens want to skip that bedtime brushing. A simple rule helps: nothing to eat or drink after your last brushing except water. Keeping brushes and toothpaste easy to reach can also cut out excuses.

A few brushing basics make a big difference:

  • Use a soft-bristle toothbrush
  • Hold it at a slight angle toward the gumline
  • Use gentle, small circles, not hard scrubbing
  • Aim for at least two full minutes

Move in an order that covers everything so you do not keep brushing the same few teeth. For example, start with the outer surfaces, then inner surfaces, then chewing surfaces on top and bottom. A small kitchen timer or a song works well for kids to reach two minutes without guessing.

The right tools can make brushing much easier. Many kids, seniors, and people with braces or arthritis do better with an electric toothbrush. The smaller heads and built-in timers can help them reach more spots with less effort. Replace your brush or electric head when the bristles start to bend, fray, or look flat. If it feels like you have to scrub harder to feel clean, it is probably time for a new one.

Flossing and Cleaning Between Teeth Made Easy

Brushing only cleans the surfaces your brush can reach. The tight spaces between your teeth hold sticky plaque, and that plaque can lead to cavities, bad breath, and early gum problems. Cleaning between your teeth is just as important as brushing, even if it feels like one more step.

You have options, so you can pick what you are most likely to use:

  • Traditional string floss
  • Floss picks
  • Water flossers
  • Interdental brushes

Traditional floss is very effective when used with a gentle back-and-forth motion. Floss picks can be easier for kids or for people who have trouble reaching their back teeth. Water flossers can help if you have braces, bridges, or tight spaces. Interdental brushes are helpful around larger gaps or dental work. We can help you choose what is best for your mouth during your visit with a dentist in Council Bluffs.

Aim to clean between your teeth once a day. Many people prefer nighttime so teeth are clean before sleep. When you are just starting, your gums may feel tender and can bleed a little. Go slowly, curve the floss in a C-shape around each tooth, and avoid snapping it straight down. If bleeding, puffiness, or soreness keeps going for more than a week or two, or your breath stays bad even after brushing and flossing, it is time for a dental exam and professional cleaning.

Food, Drinks, and Habits That Shape Your Teeth

What you eat and drink all day long affects your smile. Sipping water, especially fluoridated tap water, is one of the easiest ways to help protect your enamel. It rinses away bits of food and weak acids, and it keeps your mouth from getting too dry.

Tooth-friendly snack ideas include:

  • Cheese and yogurt
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Crunchy veggies like carrots or celery
  • Summer fruits like apples or berries, in moderation

Be careful with sneaky smile saboteurs. Sugary drinks, energy drinks, and frequent snacking keep your teeth under almost constant acid attack. Summer treats like ice pops, sports drinks, and citrus fruits are fine once in a while, but try to have them with a meal instead of sipping or nibbling all day. Rinse with water afterward, and wait a bit before brushing so your enamel has time to recover.

Some common habits are tough on enamel too. Grinding or clenching your teeth, nail-biting, chewing ice, and opening packages with your teeth can chip or crack them. Many people grind in their sleep and only notice jaw soreness, headaches, or flat-looking teeth. A dentist in Council Bluffs can check for signs of grinding and talk with you about a custom nightguard or other ways to protect your teeth while you rest.

Turning Home Care Into a Family Routine

Good oral care sticks when it becomes part of your daily rhythm. Connect brushing and flossing to things you already do every day. For example, brush after breakfast and before bed, right after washing your face or changing into pajamas. During vacations or busy sports seasons, keep the same order even if the clock changes.

Habit stacking can help:

  • Brush right after you clear the breakfast dishes
  • Floss right before you read or scroll at night
  • Keep travel brushes and floss in sports bags and backpacks

For kids, motivation matters. Simple tools like sticker charts, fun phone timers, or two-minute songs can keep them brushing long enough. Letting kids choose their own toothbrush color and fluoride toothpaste flavor gives them a sense of control and makes brushing feel less like a chore.

Partnering with a dental team you trust makes everything easier. Regular checkups and cleanings back up what you do at home and allow us to catch small problems before they turn into bigger ones. At Valley View Dental, we focus on helping both anxious kids and nervous adults feel comfortable in the chair so visits can feel normal, not scary.

Take the Next Step Toward a Healthier Smile

Strong smiles grow from simple habits you repeat day after day. Brush twice daily with good technique, clean between your teeth every day, choose tooth-friendly foods and drinks, and avoid habits that crack or wear down enamel. You do not have to be perfect. Small, steady changes add up to healthier gums, fewer surprises, and better checkups over time.

Home care is powerful, but it is only part of the picture. Professional cleanings, exams, and digital X-rays let a dentist in Council Bluffs see areas your mirror cannot and clean spots your toothbrush and floss may miss. Valley View Dental offers preventive, restorative, and cosmetic care for families in our community, and we are here to support you at every stage of your oral health.
