Recognizing When Dental Implants Beat Dentures for Your Smile

Meet The Doctor

Dr. Mary Rock

The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.

Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.

Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.

Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.

At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.

A Confident Summer Starts with a Confident Smile

Missing teeth or loose dentures can make simple things feel stressful. Smiling for a photo, ordering your favorite meal, or catching up with family can turn into moments of worry if you are afraid your teeth will slip or look fake.

As the weather warms up and social plans grow, many adults start to think more about their smiles. If you feel yourself hiding in pictures, skipping certain foods, or touching your dentures to make sure they stay in place, you are not alone. These are common signs that your current solution is not working as well as it could.

Dental implants give many people a more secure, natural-feeling option. They can often work better than traditional dentures for comfort, confidence, and long-term oral health. Our goal is to help you understand when implants might be the better choice and how we support that process every step of the way.

Why Missing Teeth Demand More Than a Quick Fix

When a tooth is lost, the problem is not just the empty space you see in the mirror. Inside the jaw, the bone that used to support that tooth no longer has a job. Over time, that bone can shrink. This can affect how your face looks and how your bite works.

Here is what can happen after tooth loss if it is not handled with a long-term plan:

  • Bone in the jaw can thin out and shrink
  • Neighboring teeth can tilt or shift into the gap
  • Your bite can change, leading to extra wear on remaining teeth
  • Chewing can become harder and less comfortable

Traditional dentures can replace the look of teeth, but they rest on top of your gums. They do not stimulate the jawbone the way natural roots do. As the bone changes, dentures can loosen, which leads to more movement, more sore spots, and more adjustments.

This is not just about comfort. It also affects your daily life. People with unstable dentures often find themselves:

  • Avoiding fresh corn, grilled meats, and crunchy veggies
  • Chewing mostly on one side to keep dentures stable
  • Struggling with certain words or sounds
  • Saying no to social events because they feel embarrassed

Our philosophy is to look past the quick fix of simply filling spaces. We focus on protecting your bone, supporting your facial shape, and helping your bite stay stable so you can feel good about smiling and eating the foods you enjoy.

When Dental Implants Outperform Traditional Dentures

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are gently placed into the jawbone. They act like artificial tooth roots. Once they bond with the bone, they can hold a single crown, a bridge, or a full set of replacement teeth.

Compared to traditional dentures that rest on the gums, implants often offer stronger benefits:

  • Stability: Implants stay anchored when you talk, laugh, or chew
  • Function: They can provide a biting strength closer to natural teeth
  • No adhesive: You do not need pastes or creams to keep them in place
  • Less slipping: No sudden movement when you yawn, sneeze, or take a big bite

Comfort is another big difference. Because implant-supported teeth connect to posts in the bone, they do not rub on the gums like a loose denture can. Many people say that implant-supported teeth feel much more like their own teeth. This often leads to clearer speech and less worry about clicking sounds.

There is also the long-term view. While implants usually have a higher upfront cost than basic dentures, they are designed as a lasting solution. With good home care and regular dental visits, implants can serve you for many years. Traditional dentures often need to be relined, repaired, or replaced as the jawbone changes, which can add up over time.

Key Signs Dental Implants May Be Better for You

How do you know if implants might be a better option than dentures for your smile? Here are some clear signs:

  • You struggle to eat with your dentures. If you avoid foods like steak, apples, nuts, or corn on the cob because you are worried your teeth will slip, this is a hint that your bite needs more strength and stability.

  • You have ongoing sore spots or a loose fit. If your dentures often rub, create sore areas, or feel like they never stay in place for long, your jawbone and gums may be changing under them.

  • You are worried about facial aging. When the bone under a denture shrinks, the lower part of the face can start to look sunken or collapsed, which can make you look older. Implants help stimulate the jawbone, which supports your facial shape.

  • You feel self-conscious speaking or smiling. If you smile with your lips pressed together, avoid laughing, or feel nervous talking in groups, a more secure option may help you relax and enjoy those moments again.

  • You want a more permanent solution. Some people are simply tired of taking their teeth in and out, cleaning multiple parts, and dealing with adhesives. They prefer something that stays put and is brushed more like natural teeth.

If several of these points sound familiar, it is worth learning more about dental implants in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and how they could fit your needs.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants in Council Bluffs, Iowa

Many adults can be good candidates for implants, but there are a few important factors we look at.

  • General health and lifestyle: Non-smokers and people with well-managed health conditions often do very well with implants. Good daily oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing, is also important.

  • Jawbone health: There needs to be enough healthy bone to support the implant posts. For patients who have worn dentures for years and lost bone, bone grafting may sometimes be an option to build support.

  • Number of missing teeth: Implants are very flexible. They can replace:

  •   One missing tooth with a single implant and crown
  •   Several missing teeth with an implant-supported bridge
  •   A full arch using implants that hold a full-arch restoration or implant-supported denture

At Valley View Dental, Dr. Mary Rock and our team carefully study each case. We rely on a full exam and dental imaging such as X-rays and, when appropriate, 3D imaging to understand your bone, bite, and gum health. Then we talk through your options, which may include individual implants, implant bridges, or hybrid choices like implant-retained dentures.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. We listen to your goals, your comfort level, and your budget to help design a plan that matches your lifestyle and helps you feel good about your smile again.

What to Expect From the Dental Implant Process

If you are a candidate for implants, it helps to know what the process usually looks like.

First comes the consultation and exam. We:

  • Talk about your concerns and what you hope to change
  • Review your medical and dental history
  • Take needed imaging to see your bone and teeth
  • Discuss different options, such as single implants, implant-retained dentures, or other restorative choices

Next is planning and placement. Together, we create a step-by-step plan. If you need preparatory care, such as extractions or bone grafting, we schedule that. When it is time to place the implants, we use gentle techniques and local anesthesia. We also offer relaxation options when needed and explain what we are doing so you stay informed.

After the implants are placed, there is a healing period called osseointegration. During this time, the bone bonds with the titanium posts. Once healing is complete, we attach your custom crown, bridge, or implant-supported denture. These restorations are shaped and shaded to blend with your smile.

Starting treatment in the spring often works well for many people. It gives your mouth time to heal so that by late summer or into fall, you may be ready to enjoy events with a more secure, natural-feeling smile.

Ongoing support is a big part of keeping implants healthy. We schedule follow-up visits to check healing, share tips for cleaning around your implants, and encourage regular professional cleanings. With daily brushing and flossing at home and routine visits in our Council Bluffs office, you can help protect your investment and keep your smile strong.
