Summer Smile Decisions to Make Before Getting Dental Implants

Meet The Doctor

Dr. Mary Rock

The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.

Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.

Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.

Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.

At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.

Start Summer with Confidence, Not Tooth Pain

Missing or damaged teeth can feel extra obvious when the weather warms up. There are more photos, more get-togethers, and more time outside with friends and family. If you are guarding your smile or avoiding certain foods, it can take some of the fun out of summer.

Dental implants are one way to replace missing teeth with a solution that looks and feels very natural. They are placed in the jawbone and topped with a custom crown so you can smile, talk, and chew with more confidence. In this article, we will walk through smart choices to make before you start treatment, how long the process usually takes, and how planning ahead can help your summer go more smoothly.

Is Summer the Right Time for Dental Implants?

For many people, summer is a great time to begin dental implant treatment. School is out, some jobs are more flexible, and it can be easier to take a day or two to recover after appointments. On the other hand, summer can also be packed with trips, sports, and big events. That is why timing matters.

Here are a few ways summer can help with treatment:

  • You may have vacation time to use for surgery and follow-up visits
  • School-age kids and college students are home and easier to bring to appointments
  • Lighter schedules can make rest and recovery less stressful

But there can also be challenges:

  • Travel plans may fall close to surgery dates
  • Outdoor sports and high-contact activities might need a pause
  • Hosting guests or big parties can make post-surgery eating tricky

Implant treatment happens in stages, and the full process usually runs longer than a single season. Starting in early or mid-summer often means your final crown may be placed later in the year. The choice to begin now or wait until fall depends on your:

  • Work and school schedule
  • Travel plans and major events
  • Comfort with possible swelling or soreness during social activities

Understanding the Dental Implant Timeline

Knowing the basic steps can make the process feel less stressful. While every treatment plan is different, dental implants often follow four main phases.

1. Consultation and planning

We start by checking your teeth, gums, and bite and by taking imaging, such as X-rays. This helps us see the bone in your jaw and plan where the implant should go. We also talk through your health history and your goals for your smile.

2. Implant placement

The implant itself is placed into the jawbone during a minor oral surgery visit. You are numbed, and we focus on keeping you as comfortable as possible. After this appointment, most people have:

  • Soreness or tenderness around the area
  • Some swelling in the cheek or gums
  • A need to stick to softer foods for a short time

3. Healing and bone integration

Over the next several weeks or months, the bone around the implant heals and grows around it. This step, often called integration, is what helps the implant stay stable. During this period, you usually:

  • Keep the area clean with careful brushing and rinsing
  • Avoid chewing hard or sticky foods on that side
  • May return for check-ins so we can watch your healing

4. Final crown placement

Once healing is strong, we place a connector and then a custom crown that matches your other teeth. This is when your smile feels complete again.

If you start dental implants in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in spring or early summer, you may enjoy:

  • Early summer for consultation and planning
  • Mid to late summer for implant placement and early healing
  • Fall or winter for your final crown, depending on your needs

Health Factors to Consider Before You Commit

Dental implants are not right for everyone, and a careful health review is very important. We look at many parts of your overall health, not just your teeth.

Some key factors include:

  • Gum health and any history of gum disease
  • Bone levels and strength in your jaw
  • Blood sugar control if you live with diabetes
  • Tobacco use, including smoking and vaping
  • Medicines that may affect bone or healing

Seasonal issues can matter too. In our area, spring and early summer can bring allergies, sinus pressure, and colds. Sinus problems in the upper jaw area can affect comfort after oral surgery, so it is helpful to tell us about:

  • Seasonal allergy symptoms
  • Recent sinus infections or pressure
  • Any regular allergy medicines or sprays

At Valley View Dental, we rely on a complete exam, imaging, and a full medical history review before we suggest implants. This helps us build a plan that is tailored to you and aims to support safe healing.

Planning Around Vacations, Events, and Activities

Implant surgery and healing go best when your calendar gives you a little breathing room. It helps to look a few months ahead so you can avoid conflicts with big life moments.

Think about:

  • Weddings, reunions, and graduations where you will be in photos
  • Family trips where you will be away from home
  • Work projects or deadlines that add stress

As a general guide:

  • Try to avoid surgery in the few days right before long flights or road trips
  • Give yourself time for swelling to go down before big social events
  • Plan follow-up visits before you will be out of town

If you have kids in summer sports or camps, it can help to:

  • Choose a surgery date that is not right before a big game or tournament
  • Plan for a short rest period from contact sports
  • Arrange follow-up appointments on days when driving and schedules are easier

Our goal is to fit implant visits into your life, not the other way around. Careful planning makes it more likely that you can stick with your normal routines while still giving your mouth time to heal.

Budgeting for a Long-Term Summer Smile Upgrade

Dental implants are a long-term investment in your smile and comfort. They typically last longer than many other tooth replacement options when cared for properly. While the upfront cost is often higher than options like removable dentures or some bridges, many people appreciate that implants:

  • Do not come in and out day to day
  • Help keep chewing forces in the jawbone
  • Are designed to look like natural teeth

Dental insurance can be confusing, especially around what is covered for implants. Plans differ, but we commonly see questions about:

  • Coverage for exams and imaging
  • Coverage for the surgical part of treatment
  • Coverage for the final crown on top of the implant
  • Yearly maximums and how close you are to them

Our team can review your insurance and provide an estimate of what your plan may help with and what you may pay out of pocket. Many patients also explore payment plans or third-party financing so they can spread out costs. Starting implant treatment before the end of a benefit year can sometimes help you make better use of your insurance cycles, depending on how your plan is set up.
