The journey is new, but the place is familiar. Dr. Mary Rock is a dentist with over 25 years of experience and is thrilled to return to her home state to operate Valley View Dental.
Dr. Rock graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1996 and has practiced in Nebraska and New Mexico. She grew up on a farm near Avoca, a small Iowa town located approximately 40 miles east of Council Bluffs.
Dr. Rock thrives on building connections with patients. By now, she realizes people don't buzz with excitement for a dentist appointment. With that in mind, Dr. Rock's personality naturally creates a warm, light environment that prioritizes professionalism and productivity. Dr. Rock routinely finds the appropriate treatment plan for a variety of considerations, including cosmetic dentistry, root canals, implants, clear aligners, sleep disorders and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship between one's oral health and their overall wellbeing.
Growing up, Dr. Rock's teeth were crooked - a source of personal doubt and self-consciousness. She calls a successful correction of her smile life-changing, and that's not hyperbole. Doing the same for others is part of what continues to drive her passion, day-in and day-out. (If you look good, you feel good ... and all of that). Dr. Rock and her husband Tom are parents to four adult children - and a miniature dachshund - and love spending time with their seven grandchildren. Dr. Rock enjoys being outside (hiking, biking, swimming, catching a nearby live music show …) and she also enjoys sewing and being active in her community.
At Valley View Dental, Dr. Rock and her team take pride in developing trustworthy and communicative relationships with patients - and, yes, they like to have fun along the way, too.
A bright smile can make a big difference in how you feel and how others see you. Having whiter teeth can boost your confidence, making you want to smile more often. But everyday habits like drinking coffee, tea, and red wine or smoking can stain your teeth over time. Even with good oral hygiene, it’s hard to keep your teeth white without a little extra help.
Professional teeth whitening is a popular solution for achieving a brighter, whiter smile. Unlike over-the-counter whitening products, professional whitening treatments are customized and more effective. They use stronger bleaching agents that are safe for your teeth and gums and can make your teeth several shades lighter in just one visit.
In this article, we will explore how professional teeth whitening can enhance your smile. We will look at what professional whitening is, the benefits of at-home methods, what to expect during the whitening process, and how to maintain your bright smile afterward. Understanding these aspects will help you decide if professional teeth whitening is the right choice for you. Keep reading to learn more about boosting your smile with professional whitening!
Professional teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that aims to make your teeth several shades whiter. Unlike store-bought whitening kits, professional whitening treatments use highly concentrated bleaching agents that are only available to dentists. These treatments are more effective and safer because they are done under the supervision of dental professionals.
The process begins with a thorough cleaning of your teeth to remove any plaque and tartar. This ensures the whitening gel works more effectively. Then, a protective barrier is applied to your gums to shield them from the bleaching agent. Once your gums are protected, the dentist applies the whitening gel to your teeth.
The gel usually contains hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These chemicals break down into oxygen molecules that penetrate the enamel and break apart the stains on your teeth. A specialized light or laser may be used to activate the whitening agent, speeding up the process. The entire treatment usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes, and you can see immediate results.
Professional teeth whitening is not only effective but also long-lasting. Most people see a significant improvement in the color of their teeth, which can last for several months if maintained properly.
There are many options for whitening your teeth, including at-home kits, whitening strips, and natural remedies. However, professional whitening offers several benefits that make it stand out.
1. Stronger Results: Professional whitening can make your teeth several shades whiter in just one visit. At-home kits often take weeks to show results and are generally less effective.
2. Safety: The high concentrations of bleaching agents used in professional treatments are safe under the supervision of a dentist. At-home kits can sometimes cause gum irritation or tooth sensitivity if not used correctly.
3. Personalized Treatment: During a professional whitening session, the dentist customizes the treatment to your specific needs. They can target areas with more staining and ensure even whitening across all your teeth.
4. Quick Process: Professional whitening treatments usually take about an hour. In contrast, at-home methods require daily or weekly applications over a longer period.
5. Expert Supervision: Having a dentist oversee the procedure ensures that everything is done correctly. Any complications, such as increased sensitivity, can be addressed immediately.
Choosing professional whitening offers a safer, faster, and more effective way to achieve a brighter smile. While at-home methods can be convenient, they often don’t match the results you can get from professional treatment.
When you decide to go for professional teeth whitening, it’s helpful to know what happens during the procedure. Here’s a step-by-step guide to what you can expect:
1. Initial Consultation: Before the treatment, you'll have a consultation with your dentist. This helps determine if you are a good candidate for whitening. The dentist will examine your teeth, discuss your goals, and explain the process.
2. Preparation: On the day of the treatment, your teeth will be cleaned to remove any surface plaque and tartar. This ensures the whitening gel can work more effectively on your teeth.
3. Protection: Your dentist will place a protective barrier over your gums to shield them from the bleaching agent. This step is crucial to prevent gum irritation.
4. Application of Whitening Gel: The dentist will apply the whitening gel, which contains either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These chemicals break down stains on your teeth.
5. Activation: Sometimes, a special light or laser is used to activate the whitening gel. This helps speed up the process and enhances the effects of the bleaching agent.
6. Rinsing and Final Touch-Up: After the gel has been on your teeth for the prescribed time, it will be rinsed off. Your dentist might reapply the gel for further whitening if needed.
The entire procedure usually takes about an hour. After it's done, you’ll immediately notice a brighter, whiter smile. The results can last for several months, especially with proper care.
After getting your teeth professionally whitened, you’ll want to keep that bright smile for as long as possible. Here are some tips to help maintain your white teeth:
1. Good oral hygiene: brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily to remove plaque and prevent stains. Use a whitening toothpaste to help maintain the brightness.
2. Watch Your Diet: Avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth, like coffee, tea, red wine, and dark-colored berries. When you do consume them, rinse your mouth with water afterward.
3. Regular Dental Check-Ups: Visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups. This will help keep your teeth healthy and catch any potential issues early.
4. Avoid Smoking: Tobacco products can stain your teeth and undo the effects of whitening. Quitting smoking will help keep your teeth white and improve your overall health.
5. Use a Straw: When drinking stain-causing beverages, use a straw to minimize contact with your teeth. This simple trick can help keep your teeth white for longer.
6. Touch-Up Treatments: Ask your dentist about touch-up treatments. These are less intense than the initial whitening and can help maintain your bright smile over time.
By following these tips, you can extend the life of your professional teeth whitening and enjoy a bright, confident smile for months to come.
A bright, white smile can do wonders for your confidence and overall appearance. Professional teeth whitening is an effective and safe way to achieve the dazzling smile you’ve always wanted. With stronger results, personalized treatment, and immediate effects, professional whitening outshines at-home methods.
Understanding the whitening process and knowing what to expect can ease any concerns and help you prepare for your appointment. Once your teeth are beautifully whitened, maintaining that brightness becomes the next important step. Simple habits like good oral hygiene, smart diet choices, and regular dental check-ups can keep your smile looking its best.
